State Street Confluence Mall Plaza, University of Wisconsin Campus, Madison, Wisconsin

2019

“Both/And — Tolerance/Innovation” marks a special place of intersection on the State Street pedestrian mall on the University of Wisconsin – Madison campus. The installation speaks to a confluence of ideas and cultural diversity coming together in a dynamic cause and effect relationship.

The installation creates a space where reality merges with abstraction. In a space between “knowing” and “believing” the stone (reality/knowing) and the stainless-steel sculpture (abstraction/believing) represents a way of learning considering both cause and effect in placing ourselves in relationship to our world and each other. The “standing stone” granite boulder is sourced from a regional quarry and the stainless-steel plates laser-cut with patterns allow light to move between the plates suggesting changing perspectives. A cylinder, cut through the plates, is located to register the solar equinox and reminds us of a balance and an ever-evolving understanding of the world around us.
